Cutting Acrylic Sheets

Cutting with Knifes and Sharp Tools:

When cutting an acrylic sheet with 3/16 thickness, the same method used in cutting glass is viable. First, a thin line is drawn on the sheet and reiterated 7 or 8 times, then it should be hold with a vise-like grip, and then pushed down hard and fast. The sheet should be scraped a little in the case of making angle shapes. We do not recommend this method with thicker sheets.

Cutting with Chainsaws:

A special blade should be used to cut acrylic sheets. The blades used for cutting aluminum and copper sheets are also usable.
Toothed chainsaws could also be used provided that the teeth of the saw are well organized and have the same height.

Cutting with Circular Saws:

A high speed blade should be used, it should also be 5 teeth per inch.
Blades with compound carbon, and with more teeth make the cutting process easier and faster.
Lifting the side of the blade to an angle of 1/8 away from the surface of the sheet, guarantees less wasted flakes.

Cutting with Manual Circular Saws:

Sheets should be held fast and tight by using a 1 by 3 piece of wood to insure a balanced distribution of pressure, it also functions as a ruler to guide the saw during the cutting process. Cutting should be done smoothly and slowly.
The saw's blade should be lubricated with soap or wax to slide through the sticking material in the laminated covering layers. Before cutting, one has to make sure that the saw is set on  full speed. The sheets should be cooled after cutting especially those with 1/4 thickness, particularly important with cementitious edges.

Cutting with Sword Saws:

Metal and plastic blades could be used.
The blade used in cutting acrylic should not be used to cut any other material.
Should be used with high speed.

Cutting with Manual Saws:

Reaching satisfactory results by using such saws is hardly possible.
One needs to make sure that the sheets are held fast and tight in order to prevent cracking.
Cracking in the process of cutting could cause breaking.

Preparation of Tools:

Spiral bolts should be used to make internal holes, and a double spiral bolt to make edges.
At these high speeds, it is not possible to avoid all vibrations, even small vibrations could cause cracks and breakings.

Electric Drills:

For best results bolts made for acrylic materials should only be used.
Manual drills could be used, but it needs some modifications to be operational with acrylic sheets and to prevent them from breaking.
Bolts should be modified by slight horizontal smoothing on the sides of the cutting edges so that they become abraded.
If the drill is working properly with the appropriate speed two spiral tapes will come out.
